Suspended solids or suspended substances are mineral or organic solids contained in water, air (or another ambient medium) that are difficult to dissolve due to their size and weight (especially similar density to the surrounding medium) and are kept in suspension. Individual particles are also referred to as suspended particles. Sedimentation, i.e. chemical precipitation, flotation and filtration, is used to remove suspended solids. HEPA filters for liquids are also used in particularly difficult cases.

- Aerosol particles (fine dust, mist, etc.)
- Fine sediment formers that lead to deposits such as sludge or silt
- Sediment components and small sludge flocs in wastewater or flowing waters
